The Legacy of Joseph E. Corcoran

Pioneering the Way

Revolutionizing Mixed-Income Housing and Urban Development

Joseph E. Corcoran founded Corcoran Jennison Companies in 1971. Recognized as the leading pioneer in the development of mixed income rental housing, Corcoran Jennison Companies continues to advance mixed-finance development concepts that produce high-quality multifamily housing developments when leveraging government assistance programs.

Queen Anne’s Gate which was completed in 1973, was Joe’s first development with Gary Jennison. It was also the first mixed income housing development in Massachusetts and today, five decades later, remains in beautiful condition and providing rental housing ranging from very low income to market rate.

Transforming Communities

Revitalizing Failed Public Housing into Vibrant Mixed-Income Communities

A successful developer of commercial office space, hotels, conference centers, and golf courses, several of Joe’s proudest accomplishments involved the conversion of failed public housing developments adjacent to urban economic opportunity centers. Most notable of these mixed income neighborhoods include Harbor Point Apartments (1,287 units) in Boston, Massachusetts, Oak Hill Apartments (759 units) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Town Homes on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. (134 units), and The Homes at Monterey Place (362 units) in New Haven, Connecticut. The lessons he learned in forming these highly acclaimed communities are applied wherever Corcoran Jennison engages in development consultation and strategic master planning.

A Sustainable Future

Embracing Joe's Vision for Mixed-Income Housing

Building upon Joe’s vision, mixed income housing is here to stay, as cities across the nation now require developers-of multifamily housing to accommodate affordable set-asides to satisfy zoning approvals.

Since Corcoran Jennison’s formation, the company has retained its founding objective of being an integrated assemblage of real estate professionals necessary to provide “one stop excellence” for master planning, development, acquisition, construction, marketing and property management when asset managing the life cycle real estate assets.

Empowering Future Leaders

The Joseph E. Corcoran Center for Real Estate and Urban Action

Joe served on the Board of Trustees at Boston College where he chaired the Building and Property Committee and taught a Real Estate and Urban Action course at the Carroll School of Management. His legacy will live on with his 2014 endowment of the Joseph E. Corcoran Center for Real Estate and Urban Action. It is there that future generations of real estate professionals will draw from his vision of using real estate to improve the lives of all regardless of income.
